A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android

For years, the notorious killer, Valentine, has been stalking the streets, killing indiscriminately and without remorse. Always on the week before Valentine's Day. This year, though, he has even more sinister plans; his masterpiece.

You play 4 different characters: a grizzled cop veteran who lost his family to the serial killer, an intrepid reporter willing to do anything for the next best story, a disgruntled accountant thrown into this unwillingly and a rookie forensic science student with something to prove.

Explore the different options available to you, but be aware: your choices might affect how the game plays out. Will all of the characters make it to the end? Will you find out the truth before it's too late? Will you play into Valentine's sick games?

Valentine's Rain is a visual novel, featuring anthropomorphic characters, for people looking for a Neo-noir, mystery/thriller story.

While the game does not contain nudity or sexual themes, it is recommended for a mature audience as it contains scenes that could be disturbing to some readers, including violence, coarse language and drug usage. Viewer discretion is advised.

Update Schedule: The game is now fully released! Aside from updates for errors and typos, what you see is what you get!

If you enjoyed the game and wish to support it (and get early access), you can visit my Patreon! (Note: as the game is fully released, no new content is being posted on Patreon until the next project begins)

For the latest information on the game and other projects, feel free to follow me on Twitter as well. I also read and reply to comments here on Itch!

A new game, tentatively title "Spruce Valley", is currently in development. Although it will take place in the same universe as Valentine's Rain, it will be an entirely stand-alone experience, with some nods to its roots. Stay tuned for more information soon(ish)!

Thank you so much for playing the game, I hope you enjoy it!

HOLY F**K!

I got so hooked to this VN that I pass an entire day just to finish the story cuz I wanted to kow the end. The vibe kinda remind me of Heavy Rain, don't know if you got inspiration from that or not but well played.

The character are likeable and have their own personnality. Even tho I notice a lot of canide for most part, which is a shame for a furry world but hey, your VN, your choice.

*Spoiler* I thought for a moment that ever Peew or Lit would be the real Valentine but dem, close enough but yet so far.

Thank you for this experience, and for whatever next project you do,I will be present.

WIsh you the best and good luck. Hoping you're well.

Hi there!
First of all, thank you for this very enjoyable game!

I do come here with a bug report: after my visit at the house in the rich neighborhood, the game had sent me back to the main menu. I did not get any ending screens. I did notice that a few times during my playthrough, I received references that did not make sense with my route choices. This is a save of my playthrough just before it forces itself back to the main menu.

Thank you and have a good day!

Something is wrong with the audio output. I'm at the start where the MC has just made it home, and the rain sound is incredibly loud. Muting all mutes the rain sound, but it doesn't change with any of the audio volume sliders. Did you assign the sound effects to any audio channels?

(1 edit)

Hey there! Hmm, I haven't coded this game in a while, but if memory serves me right, I might have created separate channels for looping background noise/music on certain points, which would not have a control in the renpy menu. Sadly, im out of the country for a month due to a family emergency, so im a bit limited in what I can do, but maybe i could do some sort of quick fix for you if I can; which OS are you using (Windows, android, apple, or linux)?

(If its apple or linux, it might be a bit harder for me to fix, but ill definitely try)

I'm on Windows, so I can just use the Windows sound controls to turn them down. But it would be nice if the volume sliders worked.

(1 edit)

Of course, I understand that :) So, as I mentioned, I'm out of the country, so I'm not in a situation to change the source code, but I did make a quick fix for you:

Step one: Download this file from Dropbox (download button is on the top right corner)

Link: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/fsfnlpb1z3fmojcc5jj4b/options.rpy?rlkey=n92zn9zg0...)

Step two: Move this file to the game folder (...\ValentinesRain-1.0-pc\game). When it asks to replace the file, click yes.

This will attach all the looping channels to the music slider in the preference screen, so you will be able to control the sound that way, in game.

Hopefully this fixes it! Once I'm back home, I'll try to look into updating the game (there's a few other fixes I have in mind for it). Let me know if you have other questions =)

Personally, a little shocked i didnt read that this wasn't a romance type of vn haha and wouldve liked the sprites to be a little more refined. But im loving the CSI meets Saw vibes.  Plus the multitude of playable characters is definitely something you dont see used a lot in Vns. My hats off to you, it's a pretty intriguing story. If it already wasn't close to 5am for me, I'd still probably be playing through haha

But night night, and congrats on the good vn. If you make anymore I hope they become hits 😊

Thank you so much for the kind words! I agree with you when it comes to the sprites; it's a lesson learned on my part, and its my intention to have more varied art assets in my next game (and from a far better artist than me!).

As for the playable characters, it certainly was a roller-coaster to write! I understand why it's not made a lot in VNs; it's a lot of work haha!

Thanks again! :)

Drac

PS: Love the CSI meets Saw comment, very accurate!!

You're very kind, thank you! :)

Glad to say that another VN is on the way! Family emergency is slowing things down a bit, but I'm hopeful to get back to work on it once I'm back home!

Thanks again!!

I remember when I played this game, I think I'm going to play it again, I loved it so much, I stayed up really late, always, just to read and play games, daaam, it's so nostalgic to come back here

Awesome to hear! I'm glad you enjoyed it before and hope you have a good time in that next playthrough :)

This is one of the most enjoyable VNs I've read yet, and criminally overlooked. Thank you!

Thank you! That's very kind to say :) I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

Found this gem a few days ago, I'd like to thank the creator for entertaining me, and also rue them for breaking my flamboyant heart!

Thanks and sorry! =P

Jokes aside, thank you for your rating and comment! I'm really glad you enjoyed the story!

Very, very underrated FVN! I loved the story, the writing was decent although I did find errors from time to time in varying degrees of severity (nothing that harmed my understanding of what was being said), the characters were amazing, and all in all it's a fantastic read that I'd easily put with some of the bigger, newer visual novels. The only lacking part was the cheesyness in how the endings are determined. It wasn't the most exciting thing to learn how the best ending was achieved, but it makes sense, and I still loved playing through the game. Hope to see more games from this dev soon!

(+2)

Thank you for the kind words! I'm very happy to hear that you've enjoyed the game! Thank you as well for you valid points! English is not my first language, so I'm not surprised to hear that some errors slipped through ^^''

As for more games, I'm happy to report that I'm working on one right now haha! Things have been slow because I want to have a good, compelling story. Valentine's Rain was years in the making after all, but with the art being done by a far more talented artist, I can focus my all on the writing :)

Thanks again!!

I need help!

The game APK downloaded goes through the installation and then ultimately says App not installed... Please help

Hi there!

I'm not a professional in IT, but I can certainly try! Is this a problem you've had only with this game or any APKs you've downloaded through itch.io?

If it's the latter, the problem may be with your permissions regarding third party apps. Essentially, a security feature of your phone makes it, by default, prevent any apps from a source that Samsung does not recognize, including Itch.io. To allow your install to proceed, you need to go into your settings => Apps. Then from that screen, at the top right, select the menu and choose "Special Access". Then from the list, select Install Unknown Apps. You can then select the browser from where you downloaded the APK, download the app again, and it should install :)

If that doesn't work or if you've never had an issue with APKs from itch.io before, let me know! I'm not sure how I could fix it, because i just tested out the download on my phone and it works fine, but maybe I can find something else.

Thanks for stopping by!

(1 edit)

Hey, thanks for the quick reply.

I actually played a few games downloaded from this site, so I think that's not the problem.

Could my phone be the problem, cuz my phone is relatively low end...

Ram-3gb

CPU: Helio G70 processor

Android:10

GPU: Mali G52

Plus how much space does this game require after installation... Maybe that's the problem (cuz the "Installation window thingy" doesn't say anything besides app not installed so there isn't much to else to go about).

Of course ^^

Hmm, could be but you said you've played other games, and Ren'py (the engine used) is not that demanding... it is a 1080p resolution though, so maybe that's pushing the limits? I'm not quite sure I'm afraid...

Checking on my phone, the size is 480 Mb after installation. It's got a sizable collection of music, so maybe that could be it?

Otherwise, I'm honestly not sure =S I'm sorry, I wish I could be of better help...

(1 edit)

Hmm that's all pretty wierd

I don't think it's the resolution but idk, I have enough storage too

But my phone has a 720p panel so could it be that the game doesn't work on anything below 1080p

Anyways thanks for replying, I'll probably play it on my laptop

Alrighty, sorry I couldn't be more help but hope you enjoy the game when you can! =)

looks good but i dont play spooky games

(+1)

I understand completely! I wouldn't call the game conventionally scary, but it is a dark game, so probably wouldn't recommend it. Either way thanks for dropping by!

Drac

PS: Sorry for the late reply!! Been a crazy few months

(+2)

I've just finished my first playthrough of this game and I couldn't wait to tell you that I loved the experience. It still boggles my mind that this is a one-man project, I couldn't believe how many story altering choices you've included in this VN! You have my deepest admiration, I really like this kind of stuff. I've been reading a lot of furry VNs lately, and while I've stumbled across many incredible stories, yours is the first where I feel like the choices are complex, interesting, and really meaningful. Again, mad respect!

I enjoyed the story and the characters a lot too. You are a fantastic writer. I also have to mention that the music in this VN is phenomenal. I understand that you didn't compose it yourself, but even just the way you found and chose the perfect track tells me you are an incredible storyteller. There was never a moment when I found the music or ambient sounds distracting or out of place.

I have to mention as well that while reading your VN I did look up your other channels and profiles and I stumbled upon the stuff you have shared about your own story and I really connected to it. You've just become a huge inspiration for me and I'm sending you all the love I can as a stranger on the Internet. :-)

If I can share one piece of criticism, the only part that left me a little disappointed was the ending(s). I understand there is a "best" ending I have to read yet, but the endings that I've got felt a bit rushed. After having spent so much with this story and these characters, I was expecting a bit more of send-off. (This is especially true of the vengeance ending I read, that was over in like five sentences! I understand this is probably not supposed to be the "true ending", but I feel like if you give your readers the power to make choices, then you need to give your readers a well-written ending no matter what they choose, even if it's a well-written bad ending!).

I also need to mention that I think I found a bug in your game. **SPOILERS** On the second day, I chose to save the dude's in the cage as Robert. When it then cuts to Jade getting kidnapped, I successfully struggled but then failed to run after her attacker. At that point, the game suddenly stops after she says "Dammit" and I'm kicked back to the title screen. Looking at the script for JadeDay2_2, I see that under label FailedChaseAttacker there is nothing for if SaveJade == False. I believe that is the problem?

Finally, one last thing I have to mention is that I've found a few spelling mistakes here and there. Especially, I saw that you've mixed up "we're" and "were" a lot of times! It might be worth double checking that, if you care about that sort of stuff! :-)

Once again, I really loved this game, I hope your next VN is coming along smoothly. I can't wait to read more from you!

(+3)

As you may have seen below, I have a terrible habit of having wordy comments, so I hope you will forgive me if it's a tad long haha!

First of all, a big thank you, really. Your words are beyond kind! It made me really happy to read it, I can't really describe it. Believe me, it was a crazy project to do on my own, so my mind is boggled too at times thinking about it! The funny thing is, when it comes to choices, the entire thing spawned from a crazy idea that I had, which was "What if a main character could die right at the start if the player chose to... and the story would just continue?". Little did I know what I was getting myself into haha!

I also have to say that I really -really- appreciate you mentioning the music! It is quite amazing what others have made and allowed for use under creative commons, and I'm thankful for them all, but your comment alone makes me glad I spent literal hundreds of hours pouring through track after track XD

And thank you again for the kind personal words ^^ It's been a journey, but hey, no road is without its bumps on the road!

Ah yes, the endings. Thank you for your honesty :) as hard as it is to put out a creative work like a VN, it's also tough to be honest how we feel about things to someone else when work is needed. It might surprise you to hear it, but I agree with you! I can tell you the reasons, that there are 30 variations of the endings, that I was beyond exhausted from making sense of over 150 variables that impact to a greater or lesser degree how things proceed, that I had run out of creative juices so to speak. But a pilot that makes an excellent take-off and a great trip, but crashes the plane on landing can't be told he did a good job. A drastic analogy but you get what I mean =P I won't promise anything, as I don't want to make a commitment, but if only for readers like you who've obviously liked the story I made and the characters, I will try to rethink if I want to redo the ending at some point. Again, no promises; it's hard for me to justify working on a project that did not really have success, but let's say that I have at least the motivation after reading your comment :)

Thank you also for reporting that bug! As I said earlier, there are over 150 variables, so I'm pretty impressed that yours is the first error report I'm getting loll! I'll take that as a good sign that my QA, while not flawless, at least isn't too too bad haha! I'll look into it :) Sadly, I don't know exactly when I'll patch it, but it's duly noted. I apologize that the game ended for you at that point though, I hope you didn't lose too much time retracing your steps =(

As for the spelling mistakes, I appreciate the heads up! A friend of mine kindly combed through the scripts and also pointed out a few mistakes here and there, so I'll take a look at those we're and were as well :) And I do care haha! It's amazing how a typo can take you out of the experience, so gotta make sure there's as few as possible! Though 455k words without an editor, there's bound to be a few here and there =S Add that English is not my first language, so yeah, it's a recipe for disaster lol!

Thank you again for taking the time to write this lovely comment :) I know it will never be a best seller, I know very few people will actually ever read it, and even from the few that do, it may be polarizing... But know that you've made an aspiring writer very happy, simply for playing it :) Thank you!!

You're very sweet, I'm really glad I made you that happy with my little comment! I was a bit worried that my criticism part came off a bit too harsh, but I'm glad you took it constructively as it was intended.

I'm excited to know you might come back to this project, but I totally understand what you're saying, it was a huge amount of work at the time and now you have other things to work on. Do not feel pressured, it was still a worthwhile experience as it is. Of course, if you do choose to write more, I will be reading it. :-)

I'm really sorry that you didn't receive as much appreciation for this project as you'd hoped. I have the feeling that this is not down to any flaw of the story itself, but simply that it still needs to find the right audience. Probably not enough people are giving it a chance because the art is not as eye-catching as in other works and the furry fandom skews more towards the romance/erotica genre. But I get the feeling that you already know that because I see you mentioned these aspects when talking about your next project. I wish you all the success you deserve and I hope that as you become more well known, people will be curious and discover your first work as well!

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

Another funny bit I feel like sharing with someone about the story and that may interest you as the author...

I was so convinced that the big reveal was going to be that Fabio was Valentine ahah!  Considering how crazy and Machiavellian Valentine is, I thought he was playing the double identity game and controlling two gangs at once.

It all made sense to me: Fabio had the money and the criminal know-how, Valentine kept using French expressions in his calls, the fur color and the tail matched up, if I'm not mistaken Fabio is never present whenever Valentine calls, there was even a fox in the police force we knew of! Even Valentine's real name is sort of a French name. When it came to the point when Fabio was the only victim whose game took place by phone, I thought to myself "Ah, you're not fooling me, you're alternating between two voices!"

Now I feel bad that I spent half the novel giving poor Fabio the stink eye. ;-(

(+1)

My apologies for the lateness of my reply!! Let's say things have been crazy since the holidays and leave it at that =_=

*****SPOILERS*****
Thanks for sharing that last little bit there! I have to admit that I am quite entertained by how many different conclusions people have come to in regards to the game! I have peppered the story with Red Herrings (e.g because the story implied that Valentine is Canid, well, I decided that half of the characters would be Canid lol), so yes, even Fabio's demeanor is meant to throw off people. Yet its still not that far fetched to find out who the culprit is; with all the information in the game you can get (if you go for the bad ending/save no one that you can), the real one ticks off all the boxes ^^

Thanks again for sharing!

I cant say, that VN is best, but atleast it reminds me Danganronpa, and bloody psychological thriller named as 'Saw' because of the choices between persons, damn, i love detectives and thrillers, but... this VN misses too much things.

Well, Carter interesting character and Robert, i feel sorry for his family, and see him suffer because of his memories, makes my heart jump out of chest.

Thanks fo the great story Dracino!

Hope you expand your writing skills.

Thank you for your comment! I always welcome criticism, and certainly hope to improve as it goes :) Sorry to hear that you haven't enjoyed it as much as I would hope, but I still hope you had a good time of it.

Take care and thanks for playing!

(+2)

I've noticed that as well, oh well, some folks just have way too much time on their hands I guess.

will it contain romance routes in this detective genre type novel?

(+1)

Hi there! Sorry to disappoint, but Valentine's Rain does not contain romance :( Keep your eyes peeled tho! My next VN will have romance in it, hopefully something to look forward to! ^^

(+1)

What is the name of the new VN if it is still going to be made?

Hey there :) The tentative title is called Spruce Valley. It's still being worked on, as are the art pieces, so it very much is alive but still got quite a bit of work to be done on it. I want to make sure that the writing is even better, and that there is plenty of art assets, so it stands out as an improvement of my first work. Thanks for the interest! I'm sorry for the wait, but I hope it'll be worthwhile.

Awesome! I can't wait to see.

(+1)

While you have completed the game's story and coding related to it, I do find myself unsatisfied that all the sprites are stills and that some sprites are missing, let alone any sort of CGs that could be relevant.  Of course wouldn't want any CGs of the more gruesome stuff, but if this is as it must be, maybe its better this way. Still would like to know if there is a way I can make a contribution to you for this VN, other than Patron, as to also support your ongoing efforts.

Heck it might be really messed up, but you could always create an alternate timeline of this VN as a different theme at some point, not saying to change everything so it perfect and sun shiny, that would be too dull, but many of the characters could end up still pursuing similar courses in life, but avoiding there being too much drama/finality.  It may be a work of fiction, but it really does make me feel for ALL of them...

Thank you so much for your comment! Since you took the time to be thorough here, I will try to do the same for a response :)

The fact that you felt something for all the characters really makes me happy, though I understand, much like the comment below yours, the disappointment that comes with the fate of some characters. All I can really say about it is that everything's been thoroughly planned and all outcomes carefully thought out; whether it's for character development or shock value to the reader, there's a reason behind it all.

When it comes to the art, your criticism is completely valid and one I've heard before from my close knit friends that play tested it. The lack of art variety (and arguably quality) is linked to two things: my overall apathy with drawing and a depression to boot. I'm not going to go into sob stories here, it's just a fact of my life I've been working to overcome. Whether it's a direct result of the depression or not, drawing has become something I don't enjoy anymore. The art you see was painstakingly made as is, so I went for the bare minimum. I agree with you that some scenes could have been improved with visuals, but it was (and still is) something that is very difficult for me to do. It does not excuse it, but I certainly hope this gives you a bit of insight into why it's so. My next VN will be illustrated by another artist, thankfully, so there should be more variety of sprites (expressions!!) and some CGs at least, so that should be something to look forward to :)

As for your suggestion of an alternate timeline, I actually like that a lot! There would certainly be things I could explore more with those characters and different outcomes could certainly be interesting. That being said, I stand by the decisions I've made relating to the story of Valentine's Rain. I'm all for exploring what ifs though!

And lastly, regarding contributions, the fact that you want to at all means already so much to me ^^ I used to have the donate button active here on Itchio, but some friends told me it dissuaded others from downloading the game. For me, it's more important that people feel free to play the game than any coin I could make. I created Valentine's Rain to be an experience to be enjoyed by the most people possible. And in having played the game yourself and commenting about it, you've already given me more support than you can imagine ^^ So yeah, consider that mission accomplished haha!

Thanks again for playing the game! Despite the art and some disagreements with the dramatic turns of events, I do hope you still had a good experience :)

After few tries got the best possible ending... yet it left off with curiosity... hrm..., but that is often how it does go!

Nice! Congratz! It's not easy to get the best ending :D

* Little spoilers *

Wow I don't know what to say, really a fascinating job, I enjoyed every minute of this Vn, how it plays with morals and feelings as a person. I was hurt by Butch, I had become fond of him despite the fact that he is a secondary character although I understand that he is a factor for the story, even so I would have liked that he could be saved in some way, and second, I It worries that you have been able to create a criminal mind like Valentine hahahaha aside the jokes, I congratulate you on this work, do you plan to create other Vn?

(An apology if my English is not very good, it is not my native language)

(+1)

*Spoilers!!*

Thanks so much for your feedback and for playing the game! I totally understand the hurt when it comes to Butch, it was a hard decision because I really liked him as a character too, and I debated a long time, but for Trinity's character development, it was a necessary step... I hope this gives you a bit of insight in the decision process that came with it ^^

As for coming up with Valentine, I don't even know myself how I conjured up someone as messed up as him XD

Thank you very much for your kind words! To answer your final question, I do plan another VN! It will be completely different than Valentine's Rain, however; the plan is for a more linear romance/horror VN. It's still in conceptual stages and I also have a different artist doing the artwork for it; so it could take a few months before it's ready, sadly.

Thanks again for your comment and review! It means the world to me!

Drac

PS: your english is perfectly fine haha; english is also my second language believe it or not; don't underestimate your abilities! :)

(+2)

Well, it really doesn't matter how long your next Vn takes, the best things take time and seeing how fascinated I was with Valentine's Rain, I can say it will be worth the wait.

And thank you, it's nice to know that my time learning English is not a waste.

PS. And if you need a translator, I can help you in my free time with the Spanish translation, so that your Vn reaches more people.

Thanks so much! I hope it will be worthwhile haha :)

Aww, that's a really kind offer! I will have to respectfully decline, however, though it really means a lot that you'd offer ^^ I have a few reasons but the two big ones are the scope of the project itself and quality assurance. It might not seem like so but the game total 450000 words, which would be quite an undertaking to translate for anyone. As for quality assurance, while I have no doubt you would do an excellent translation job, I wouldn't be able to verify it, which is really important to me. This product has my name on it and while there are mistakes in it, I pride myself in having personally quadrupled checked every update and every path to ensure there were as few as possible.

Thanks again for the offer though! Really means a lot ^^

why just whyyyyyyyyyy

Yeah, it's a pretty brutal update XP Valentine's Rain is definitely not a feel good story I'm afraid, but I hope you're enjoying it none-the-less ^^

lets go an update

i love iitttttt i needddd more give me more nooooowwww.

(+1)

Haha! Glad you're enjoying it ^^ You don't have to wait much longer, I'll be posting a new update in a little over a week from now =)

leeets goooooooo

Oh my, update AHHHHHH

This game deserves so much more attention!.
The writing is incredible and its pretty amaizing how you managed to make everything so...  balanced yet chaotically interesting.

Like, its kind of obvious who the antagonist is nevertheless your writing somehow shows perfectly how no one is a 100% saint or good person, but at the same time the dialogues and situations the characters are put in shows their good side as well, making them and the situation itself be more...real.

And the system of how you get the see the story from almost evey character (point of view) its literally unique, I never saw that in other games!, at first it can be seen as slow if its not your type of game but eventually  it enthralls you in the story; and the timing games ... ahhh amaizing!.

'kay I'll stop.

Apologies for any mistake in my writing.

Already downloading the version 0.4, can't wait a play it!.

also the designs 10/10

like, for real I-

I'll stop now

(+1)

Oh my gosh, you're far too kind, thank you so much for writing this comment! It really motivates me to keep going ^^ It makes me really happy to hear that you're enjoying the game! Thanks for your support! =)

What the heck man this game is insane  the kind of story that is about to unfold is getting darker the longer I play. I'm starting to hate Valentine a lot more too, his character is so intriguing I hope he gets everything he deserves in the end.

(+3)

Yours is the kind of comment that make me love to write haha! Thanks so much for your feeback, I'm glad you're enjoying it so far =)

Playing through the game right now and i'm having a blast, nice work dude!

I'm loving this concept of a multiple protagonist murder mystery, i'll be sure to finish it and wait patiently for more!

(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying it ^^
